Mold Me Oh Lord
John TiltonJeremiah 18:1-4
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.
I love these scriptures, as there are so many perspectives and lessons that are contained within these words. Each time I read them I am able to gain an additional treasure and insight. The basic premise is that the clay in the potter’s hands can be re-shaped if the clay piece is not materializing, as the potter would want. However, thinking about the potter’s wheel and what it takes to keep the clay pliable is where the insight is. The fact that the wheel at best needs to continue in its movement to allow consistency in the desired shape and that adding water keeps the clay pliable; to much water can ruin the clay as to not being able to hold its shape, and not enough water will not allow the clay to be pliable and shapeable.
I think of our lives. When things are not turning out the way we would like or when we are confronted with turmoil, mistakes, challenges and battles in our lives; stopping all that we do and trying to check out from life and our responsibilities is not the answer, although we often want to do that, just go to our safe place and check out or become polarized. We also may tend to stop receiving that which feeds us physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. This often happens when a close relationship is broken or especially in death of a loved one. Yet, the key is to keep the wheel of life spinning, receiving the water of sustenance, support, wisdom and God’s Word to enable us to be pliable and remolded into a whole new way of thinking or being. The mars of past challenges and tribulations can then be smoothened out by the hands of the Master, Jesus Christ, even changing the rules and constants that we believe in and live by. The Master then can transform us into a whole new creation. And that is often the real battle! I know that I must fight through the pride and pain of allowing things to roll off my back and be let go.
Dear Lord, truly may I be the clay that you will remold and reshape as needed when one season must come to an end and another should begin, enabling me to let go of the past and the constants that may prevent me from being reshaped into the person you want me to be. May I continue to realize that I must seek your water of life and lessons to keep me pliable in your hands.
