22
Greatest = Least
Tim Savage24Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them. 25Jesus told them, “In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called ‘friends of the people.’ 26But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant. Luke 22
Aren’t you glad to know that this conversation took place among those closest to Jesus? I know I am. Even those who knew Jesus best still argued over who would be the greatest. I shouldn’t feel quite so bad that I have a tendency, like most people, no doubt, to want to be the greatest, the most powerful, the most influential, the most respected, the most pampered, yada, yada, yada. In the world kings, CEOs, COOs, CFOs, producers, directors and stars get all of the privileges – first class air, luxury hotel suites, top notch restaurants, the most money, yada, yada, yada, but Jesus gives us simple and straight forward instruction, “But among you it will be different.”
I need this reminder often. That’s why we do devotions, not monthly, not weekly, but daily, because I need to make that course adjustment a little each day. I start to head toward another goal, the goal that the world tells us is the most important, the most fun, but Jesus turns that on it’s head. I must work on my humility and service. I must remember that being a leader is actually being a servant and that I must help those that I lead, not the other way around. I have to keep my eyes on the final prize, not those that the world screams at me.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Please help me to correct my course and navigate to You. May my life be an example and a light to draw others closer to You. Help me to have humility without being humbled.
In Jesus name,
Amen
