JESUS: The Son and High Priest

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture

Hebrews 5:5In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.”

Observation

The High Priesthood of Jesus is one of the central themes of Hebrews. There are contrasting distinctions of the earthy and heavenly high priests. Jewish Christians are called to to live by faith in Christ, their new High Priest, and not by the works of the law, according to the former, earthly priests.

In verse 5, what is accented in my heart is the author’s emphasis on relationship between God the Father and God the Son. The glory of God is revealed through a familial relationship - not a functional, authoritative one.

Application

I’m feeling so blessed right now! The Holy Spirit is calling my heart to His attention on the difference between how I view Jesus - as High Priest and Son. yes - He is a Priest who has gone before me, to make atonement for my sins. But He is Son, the personal God, who is pictured in relationship to God His Father.

I’m called to an intimate relationship with my Father God, as a child of God. I’m not “just a created being” who’s sin was paid for by the works of Jesus the High Priest. I’m blessed to know that I am loved as a child, not just as God’s creation. The language, the picture, the truth to me is that I have a personal and intimate relationship with the Father, through Jesus the Son, who has called me to be His son!

My take away is to live with a heart of a son, not mentality of a servant. As a son of God, I have a more intimate relationship that’s relational. If I have the mentality of a servant - I tend to be more “works, rewards, performance” oriented.

Prayer

Thank you Spirit of God! You are amazing and I’m so grateful for Your heart to reveal Jesus to me! Thank you Daddie God for calling me into a personal relationship with you as Your son!
