Solace In His Sovereignty

Justin Smith

Scripture

Isaiah 22:22

"...When he opens doors, no one will be able to close them; when he closes doors, no one will be able to open them."

Hebrews 12:12

"So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees."

Observation

“When will I ever find a job? When will I ever find a mate? Will I have the money to pay for my bills this month? When will God deliver me from this season of hardship and strife?” We’ve all found ourselves faced with these difficult questions, and with differing measures of faith, we hope and pray wondering if God will really come through for us this time. Sometimes our faith is strong and it’s easy to find hope and assurance, but there are times when our faith is weak, our hope is waning, and our doubts overwhelm our devotion. It’s in these times that we must remember these passages.

God’s people were in dire straits, mourning and fear were their daily ritual, and there was no hope in sight. It was in this moment of sorrow that God revealed His Sovereignty. He showed Himself as their true King, their true Deliverer, their true God by appointing a man that He would anoint, giving him the power to open doors, no one could close, and close doors no one could open, the ultimate sign of authority and victory. What a great reminder that it’s God who cares for the needs of His people, and He is the One who opens and closes doors for those who trust and believe. When the cards appear to be stacked against you take heart knowing that He is in control.

Application

Do the doors of your life all seem closed? Do all the cards appear to be stacked against you? Trust Him who is your true King, Deliverer, and God. Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Trust Him and acknowledge Him in everything you do, and He will direct your path. Don’t give up, don’t give in, but, as Hebrews 12 says “take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees” because He knows your situation, He sees your heartache, He hears your prayers, and as you trust Him, He will open the right door at the right time for you. Endure for He will intercede on your behalf.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank you that you love us. I thank you that your plans are to prosper us and give us a hope and a future. Please increase our faith when things are tough and the doors all seem closed. Empower us to take a new grip, to endure, to stand strong, so we can see Your goodness. We will trust You for You are good!

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
