Good Enough, Isn't

Tim Savage

Scripture

15“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! 16But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! 17You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. Revelation 3

Observation

Here is one of the most dangerous places for all Christians to be – standing in the middle: neither hot, nor cold. I used to be a sideline believer – grew up in a Christian home going to church, but after college I fell away from the church, I didn’t fall away from God, but my attitude was that I was living a pretty good life, I mean there were people who were much worse than me, and that was good enough. I was working, spending lots of time on the job and dating, but not connected with other Christians, not reading His word and certainly not sharing the Good News. It was many years later, after attending New Hope for the first time that I became aware that my gifts and passions could be used to share the gospel. It hit me like a tsunami when I walked in the doors of New Hope. I finally got off the sidelines and on to the field. I spent many years thinking that believing in God was enough. I wasn’t living fully for Him; I was living partly for God, but mostly for myself. I was so lukewarm, neither good nor bad, hot nor cold and had I not been invited to join a group of believers who valued involvement and the arts I might never have come out of the stands and on to the field.

Application

Good enough, isn’t. Lukewarm water will be spat out. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of thousands of Christians, like I used to be, who aren’t truly sold out and on fire for Jesus. They are content to attend church when, and only when, it’s convenient or comfortable. The days are coming when it won’t be either convenient or comfortable. Those who are lukewarm will compromise the Word of God and do what is politically and culturally correct, rather than stand firm for Him. I’m so glad we were invited to New Hope, I can’t imagine what my life would be like if not. God’s favor and covering comes from an intimacy with Him and we have to keep encouraging other out of the seats and in to the game.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for choosing me to serve You. May I represent You well to those around me. May I inspire others to catch fire for You and live lives fully committed to You.

In Jesus name,

Amen
