Walking on Water, Leaving a Wake of Wonder
John TiltonJohn 6:16-20
When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,17where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them.18A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough.19When they had rowed about three or four miles,[b]they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;and they were frightened.20But he said to them,“It is I; don’t be afraid.”
The disciples anticipated just another evening of fishing. However, the weather conditions with the strong winds and rough seas arose. Yet, they continued to row; and subsequently Jesus appeared walking on water. Jesus then quelled their fear.
It is indeed often that what we expect as typical in our lives; in life, family, ministry, and work; will arise unanticipated challenges and storms that can, and often invoke fear and consternation. The disciples’ decision to persevere and continue to row, is a reminder to me of not to let situations or appearances of stormy situations cause me to think of turning away, or turning back or stressing out. Instead, I will be intentional to look for Jesus walking on the water in the midst of the storm; being reminded that I need not fear, but look to the Lord in prayer and faith.
There indeed have been recent unanticipated situations and storms that have arisen, causing the natural impulsive response of concern and consternation. I am encouraged and will be intentional to continue to row fearlessly, and seek to see Jesus in the midst of the storm, walking on water.
Dear Lord, your timing and touch is so wonderful. I pray that you will continue to speak to me and encourage me through your Word; of your faithfulness, your provision, resolution and miracles. May the image of you walking on water be a metaphor for me of how you do defy the gravity and graveness in the downpours of life, and the storms of struggle. I will continue to wallow in the wonder of you!
