Heart, Not Just Head

John Tilton

Scripture

Luke 10:23-24

Then he turned to his disciples and said privately,“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.24For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

Observation

Jesus was stating another profound truth that those that would be able to see, and take to heart what the disciples saw and heard would indeed be blessed. It was not just the fact that they saw with their eyes and heard with their ears the teaching and miracles of Jesus, but that they would take those things to heart and allow those things to change their hearts and lives. Furthermore, Jesus recounts the fact that many prophets and kings were the same, in terms of desiring significance and success; but were unable to see what was meant as a free gift of truth, influence and life-changing lessons, probably due to the traditions and fallacies that were previously taught, and subsequently the obstacles in their heart.

Application

I can relate to this in how I can read many things and even the Bible; sometimes see things that are the result of God’s will and hand, but due to life’s matters, innocently and non-intentionally do not take those things and let them go from my eyes, ears and mind, down into my heart to change and reset my compass, barometer, principles and character. The words that come to mind that get in the way are life’s duties and responsibilities, distractions and just so many things. I guess I could sum it up with being preoccupied with too many things, too many distractions, life’s worries and a lack of priority make for the propensity to miss the things of God.

Prayer

Dear Lord, please guide and enable me to intentionally to prioritize my life and all therein so that I will indeed have the capability to see, hear, internalize, take to heart what you give as a gift to change my life and enable me to have a part in changing others. May all that you have for me as a gift go to my heart more so then my head.
