Simple and Clear

Tim Savage

Scripture

4And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit.5I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2

Observation

Paul was a very smart and learned man. He studied with the Pharisees in Israel and knew the religious law and teachings. Because of this he could read and write and was a powerful and eloquent speaker, but here in Corinthians he explained that he wouldn’t use these skills when preaching the gospel, instead he spoke simply and clearly leaning solely on Holy Spirit. He didn’t want to impress people with clever and persuasive speeches, he wanted people to see the power of God in its purest form.

Application

And so it should be with me. My life should reflect my Savior in all that I say and do. Not through clever and persuasive plans but through an inner joy and integrity that speaks louder than words. This doesn’t happen quickly. People only notice this over time, observing how we act and react to challenges and obstacles. Am I negative and see the bad in things or am I positive and a joy to be around? I must live simply and clearly and allow the Holy Spirit to shine through. I must be a light and positive influence to those I interact with.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

I want people to draw closer to You, in part, because of me. Please grant me wisdom and discernment so that I can lead and follow well. Help me to speak life and be a positive influence, but to not just be a “yes man” but to actually add value to conversation and projects.

In Jesus name,

Amen
