Steward My Leadership

John Tilton

Scripture

Mark 12:38-40

As he taught, Jesus said,“Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

Observation

Jesus warned the disciples about the misuse of the authority given to the teacher of the law in terms of their personal prominence, recognition, honor and authority before their calling and responsibilities. There’s an old saying “all show, no go.”

Application

These are very prudent scriptures for leaders and especially ministry and pastoral leaders. By way of our calling and appointment to leadership in the church, there is an authority that is pronounced on us. As the word states, there is a respect that comes from people due to our call being of the Lord and to do His will. Thus, stewarding the authority that has been given to me is very important that I use that authority to lead and shepherd people instead of making my calling, ministry, and leadership about me or to benefit me. May I truly decrease that Jesus may increase in the way I serve Him in leadership by leading and shepherding other by example of He in me, rather than me in myself.

Prayer

Dear Lord, please keep my humble in my leadership and authority that I would steward the honor of the call on my life that you’ve given me to serve you in fulltime ministry. May I use the authority you’ve given me to example who you are in me, and keep my “self” in check.
