For the Glory of God

John Tilton

Scripture

John 9:1-5 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

Observation

Jesus taught the disciples a lesson on a subject that we often question and ponder; why are some people afflicted with diseases, handicaps or hardships? Were they reaping what they sowed, including perhaps generational sin? Jesus explains that the blind person’s condition of being blind was for the glory of God to be displayed. In our assignments and calls, some of us will be called to deal with affliction, where Christ often will work through us as examples of His power, love, perseverance and understanding; even if what the world would deem as an answer to prayer is not the result. What is an interesting thought is that Jesus can continue to be the light of the world eve through our affliction and challenges.

Application

I am encourage and encouraged to share with others who question affliction and challenge that as tough as it can be, shining the light of Jesus through our affliction and challenge brings glory to God. I have recalled being moved by friends who have stood in faith on the promises of God to persevere through situations. It is often our natural response to feel like the victim and that the world and life is closing in around us. Yet, it is assuring to know and be reminded that God sees all, including our affliction and challenge. I believe that He will honor our stand in faith in Him to bring glory to Him.

Prayer

Dear Lord, life can be so challenging. We also see so many that are not as fortunate as we. Yet, we know that you have a plan, and that you love all, even in our sin, affliction and challenge. Thank you for helping me to see that your glory shines through us as we find perseverance through challenging situations to be an example and testament to your plan, will, power, faith and understanding that surpasses logic.
