Wealth or Worship

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture

For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” Mark 12:44

Observation

Mark references the heart of humility in connection to: (a) Position of the Pharisees (having the best seats and recognition, v38-40) and (b) Social-economical differences involving the rich and the widow (v41-44). I believe these accounts suggest the upcoming contrasts of Jesus position as the Son of God, taking the position of ultimate humility, on the cross - and being rich in sacrifice, giving ALL HE IS!

As the widow gave ALL, God gives ALL. God can give out of abundance. He owns everything. He is rich and powerful and ... He is GOD! But gives HIS LIFE - His very own life - the ultimate sacrifice and picture of humility!

I’m reminded of this passage... my God becoming weak and obedient to death...yet living by the power of God! 2 Cor. 13:4 For though He was crucified in weakness, yet He lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God toward you.

Application

I wonder if the widow became rich and prosperous as defined and viewed by the wealthy in her time? I wonder if she was expecting the blessings of the Lord to get out of her poverty because she was obedient to give all she had? Or did she give purely out of love and worship?

Do I give to receive more? To be more blessed? Do I give out of poverty or abundance? Convenience or out of commitment? Do I give because there is need or because I truly love? Am I willing to sacrifice all or do I withhold - even when I have much? I tell myself I’m being a wise steward but am I? Or is that an excuse to continue living comfortably? Do I “really sacrifice” in my giving while trying to be a “good steward?”

Prayer

O God! I feel like I make excuses...all the time when it comes to living a “lower life.” I wan tot live comfortably, securely, wisely - to provide for my wife - to have provisions for “retirement” or backup finances in case of emergency.

Please - Please Forgive me...for my lack of trusting You. For my selfishness and self centeredness. I am so full of myself that I fail to give out of true worship! Jesus I love You! I Love You... O please help me to Love You - with a heart of worship, a lifestyle of giving and a sacrificial living that honors You... and You alone!
