How would you respond?

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture

John 7:3 Jesus’ brothers said to him, “You ought to leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the miracles you do. 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.

Observation

John writes that Jewish leaders in Judea has a death wish on Jesus. Jesus, being aware of their intentions, chooses to stay in Galilee. But his brothers are antagonizing Him, pressing Jesus to “show Himself to the world.” As if to mock Him, to reveal and prove Himself - the brothers are operating out of unbelief, even hatred.

It’s as though John thinks about referencing Jesus’ brothers to be like Joseph’s brothers. A jealousy, hatred and desires to see Jesus killed, seemed to filled the brothers hearts - kinda like Joe’s bros! I wonder if Jesus’ brothers knew that His life was in danger if He traveled to Judea?

Application

How in the world?? How could Jesus be so patient, enduring and gracious - to withhold judgment on people - like the Pharisees, or even His brothers - His very own family? When hate, jealousy, rebellion and murder is in the heart of someone attacking me, I want to retaliate!

Whoah -I can see myself even like Jesus’ brothers -who take on a demeanor of jealousy or hatred, against those who are “more like Jesus” than I am. Spiritual jealousy can be a wicked trap. I must - I must be watchful, careful and prayerful - guarding my heart with all diligence!

Prayer

Dear Spirit of God! Please help me not to fall into the trap of jealousy, hatred, comparing, judging others. Jesus - I want to... I really wan tot be like You. To act and live in a way that reflects Your character of grace, love, forgiveness! I love You... My Lord and King!
