Priorities & Distractions

John Tilton

Scripture

Acts 6:1-4 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jewsamong them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

Observation

The Disciples made a great discovery and subsequent decision to prioritize their time and efforts in the major matters of their calling and responsibility. However, their intention was not to abdicate the needs but to recruit others to step forth … basically resulting in teamwork. What is important is that they chose those that were full of the Holy Spirit and wise.

Application

The principles of prioritizing and staying clear of distractions can be applied to everyone in all aspects of our lives so that our roles and responsibilities in our relationship with God, our family, our career and our call by the Lord. It is often so easy to get distracted and caught up in things that take up time and effort, but is not what is best. For me, it is important that I realize and am cognizant of this so that I am productive and fruitful in all aspects of my life. As I also gain the assistance and help of others in the things I do, may I team and seek those that I am in one accord with spiritually and in terms of character. Thus, potential relational, moral or character situations will be minimized.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for yet another important life lesson or prioritizing my life, my time and my efforts; and staying clear of distractions. Help me to see clearly my priorities and potential distractions.
