I want to be Nobody in You

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture

Psalm 131:1 LORD, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me.

Observation

As wise, powerful and influential as David was, the position of his heart was humility. He dealt with pride as we all do. But his song for today is filled with the truthful confession of knowing how great God is and how little he is.

Application

I see the temptation of people desiring to involve themselves in greater matters. Being with influential and profound people makes us feel better about ourselves. Doing things greater than we are capable of - which I’ve heard spun as a spiritual saying - can lead us to develop arrogant attitudes.

I have to watch that temptation - to want to be seen, be involved with great matters, to be in the know and be known. Like that childish taunting - “I know something you don’t know.”

Prayer

LORD - I need to camp on David’s opening call to the LORD! Lord - you are LORD of all…. all the matters, situations, the great and the small - You are LORD! So I can rest in not trying so hard - to make a name for myself - to be somebody…

I want to be somebody in You! Better yet - I want to be NOBODY in you…

This goes against the “feel good about myself image” and my self centered and selfish ambitions.
