Among the Wolves

Tim Savage

Scripture

2These were his instructions to them: “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields. 3Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves. Luke 10

Observation

What does it mean that we are sent out as lambs among wolves? To me, it means that people will sometimes treat us harshly or differently when they find out we’re Christians. They may look askance or disapprovingly at us, they may accuse us of being narrow-minded, prejudicial or discriminatory. They will tell us that we’re politically incorrect. Jesus has told us that we will be hunted like sheep, by wolves. I think Jesus is telling us to be prepared. We have to be ready to face persecution; we have to be ready to stand against the tide.

That’s easier said than done. Today, we are being called to live this out to a greater degree than we ever before. Now mind you, we don’t have it anywhere near as bad as many other places on earth, but still, now, more than ever, we have to defend our faith and our beliefs. We must not compromise His word.

Application

In order to survive among wolves, a lamb must be very smart and prepared and we, as believers, will need to be the same. Jesus doesn’t say, “stay home and avoid everyone, in order to stay safe,” no instead He says the opposite, “Go!” Go out where it’s not safe and you will be hated, go where you are in danger, go and try to save those who are headed for eternity without God. Just know that you will be under attack, and be prepared for it.

We must be smarter, more clever, better prepared, more tenacious, but at the same time more gracious, kind and loving. A lamb only survives in the wilderness because of his shepherd and so it is with us, we have a Great Shepherd who has laid down His life for us and we will survive by following Him. But we will not just survive, but instead, we will thrive.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

You have given us an almost impossible mission, to go out as lambs among wolves. Only with Your strength, courage, guidance and direction can we fulfill Your mission. We live to please You.

In Jesus name,Amen
