The Faith Dichomy

Tim Savage

Scripture

23“What do you mean, ‘If I can’?”Jesus asked.“Anything is possible if a person believes.”

24The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!” Mark 9

Observation

I can relate to this father’s contradiction! He was faced with a desperate situation. His son was suffering, but this man Jesus had the power to provide a miracle and heal the boy. He didn’t fully understand who Jesus was, where His healing power came from or how it worked, but he wanted his son healed so badly he was willing to do anything.

God doesn’t fit in to our preconceived knowledge and understanding of the world. He isn’t restricted by the laws of nature or physics or science. In Him, and through Him, anything is possible. So, when the father cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!” the gut-wrenching truth came out. He wanted so badly to believe but honestly he didn’t really understand who Jesus was or how He was able to do what He could do, but he knew that Jesus special and different must’ve been sent by God.

Application

Once Jesus delivered his son from the evil spirit, the father’s faith must’ve soared and he believed with all his heart, mind and soul. And so it is with me. Just a little faith opens the door for God. I’ve experienced miracles, I’ve seen His goodness, generosity and protection over me and my family and I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. I can’t fully understand God, His mysterious ways or His unlimited power but I have faith because of what He’s done in my life. I can’t predict how or when things will happen, but I know that God works all things together for my good (Romans 8:28). And for this I am so thankful.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for watching over me and my family even when I am unaware. I am so grateful that You have a plan for me and that You work all things together for my good. You are the Creator and the Almighty and all I need is faith in order to receive Your rewards.

In Jesus name,

Amen
